Development Manager
Supporting voluntary and community groups in Bexley
The Development Manager can provide advice, support and training to groups on a range of issues, including:
- FUNDING – with access to computer databases of grant-making trusts, and BVSC’s community library
- ORGANISATIONAL DEVELOPMENT – eg. developing a constitution, becoming a limited company, restructuring the organisation, trustee roles and responsibilities.
- PROJECT DEVELOPMENT – planning a project, drawing up the budget, how to manage it.
- CHARITY REGISTRATION AND REGULATION – whether your group should register and how to fill in the application.
- EMPLOYMENT – information on legal requirements and good practice around recruitment, contracts, workers’ rights, dismissal and management.
As well as giving one-off advice, the Development Manager is able to undertake in depth work with groups, such as:
- facilitating vision days
- longer term development consultancy
- serving on project steering groups
The Development Manager can also supply:
- a model constitution for a small community group
- a model Memorandum and Articles for a limited company
- a model deed for a charitable trust
- model policies
Small Groups Development Officer
Supporting small groups in Bexley
The Small Groups Development Officer assists small, new and emerging groups, providing one-to-one support, advice and training on a range of development needs, including setting up a group and identifying and accessing funding. The Small Groups Development Officer also runs the Small Groups Network and acts as a point of contact, circulating information of interest to small groups.
Development Secretary
Help with booking training and obtaining information from BVSC’s Community library
The Development Secretary is the main contact when booking places on BVSC’s Development Team training courses.
BVSC’s Community Library contains a range of books to assist groups with their development. The Development Secretary maintains the library and can assist with appointments for use of the library, including using our funding directories.
The range of books includes:
- Funding and fundraising
- Self-help groups
- Management of voluntary organisations
- Law and employment
- Regeneration and economic development
- Policy, research and community involvement
- Health and social care
The Development Secretary can also help with booking places on BVSC’s training courses.

The Development Team runs a programme of training for the voluntary and community sector, based on feedback from our users on their needs.

Community Accountant
Financial support and training
BVSC has a part-time Community Accountant – who can give free advice and support on financial issues to voluntary and community groups in Bexley.
Examples of issues on which advice and support can be given include:
- Setting up a basic bookkeeping system – either manually or on computer
- Developing a financial controls policy
- Preparing year end accounts to comply with current rules and guidelines
- Preparing budgets for funding bids and business planning
- Preparing financial reports for management committees
- Setting up and operating Gift Aid to increase income for your group
- How to set up and operate a payroll for groups with paid employees
The advice and support is delivered through training courses and one-to-one support. Groups can be supported at all stages of their development from new to more established groups.
