Prioritise what you measure

Prioritising which outcomes you measure will make the task of demonstrating your impact less daunting. Focusing on only the most relevant outcomes you have highlighted in your change model will guide you on what is important (rather than what is easiest).

NPC's Four Pillar's model explains the best approach to selecting outcomes:

  • you directly influence (rather than indirectly support);
  • are important or material to your mission;
  • are not too costly to measure; and
  • will produce credible data.

Creating a framework that supports your change model will help you to understand how and when you will measure the most important outcomes:

The level of evidence you choose depends on your audience, your stakeholders and what you will do with the information. Nesta's Standards of Evidence provides an easy to understand scale to help you decide.

It is important to remember that not all Organisations require the indepth data gathering that is required from Level 3 and upwards: NPC's Head of Measurement and Evaluation, Anne Kazimirski, explains more: http://www.thinknpc.org/blog/choosing-the-right-evidence-level/.
