BWA's Volunteer Story

Bexley Women's Aid provides support and refuge to women and children experiencing domestic abuse.

How many volunteers do you have?

BWA has 6 volunteers

What difference do your volunteers make to your organisations?

Although compared to some groups we only have a relatively small number of volunteers they make such a difference to our organisation.  They provide support to the staff to deliver the services that we have and they also provide hours of their time to carry out tasks that we struggled to fit in before.

What training can volunteers access with your organisation?

We include our volunteers on in house training if this is relevant.  We also cover relevant training such as health and safety, safeguarding etc as part of the induction.

What roles do your volunteers do for your organisation?

We have volunteers carrying out various roles – at present we have a volunteer who collects our post from the sorting office every day, logs it and delivers it to our sites for the staff and women to collect.

We have two volunteers who run our coffee morning group which is enabling survivors of domestic abuse to meet new friends, get support, learn new skills, share experiences.

We have two volunteers who support our freedom programmes – one at our evening group and one at our day group – they support the course facilitation and offer support to the women attending.

We have a volunteer who supports our drop in session – she welcomes the clients in to the drop in and makes them feel comfortable and relaxed whilst they wait to see the Domestic Violence worker.

What do your service users say about your volunteers?

The women who attend the groups and the drop in really value the support that they receive from the volunteers.  It is also inspiring for our service users to be supported by our volunteers as many of them have been service users themselves.
