Unlocking Your Community’s Hidden Helpers

Free Interactive Workshop: Unlocking Your Community’s Hidden Helpers Join us for a free interactive workshop exploring how we can better recognise and engage the hidden helpers already making a difference in our communities.

Many people in our communities are already helping others, sharing skills, offering support and making a difference — but they may not see themselves as “volunteers”. These hidden helpers can be an incredible source of energy, knowledge and community connection, but traditional volunteering opportunities do not always feel accessible, relevant or welcoming to them.

This free, interactive workshop is designed for volunteer managers, coordinators and anyone involved in recruiting, supporting or developing volunteers. The session will explore how we can better recognise hidden volunteering, understand what may stop people from coming forward, and think differently about how we design and promote opportunities.

During the workshop, we will look at:

Who the hidden “volunteers” in our communities might be

Why some people are already helping informally but do not join formal volunteering opportunities

Common barriers that are not always about time, cost or flexibility

How a different approach to conversations and role design can improve volunteer engagement

Practical ways to identify barriers and open up volunteering to more people

The session will also include a short practical exercise to help participants “meet” a hidden helper in their community and consider what might make volunteering feel possible, relevant and worthwhile for them.

This is a great opportunity to step back, reflect on current recruitment approaches and explore how small changes could help more people see a place for themselves in volunteering.

You must register to attend this event.

Please note: This workshop will take place in person. The venue will be confirmed once we have a clearer idea of numbers.

At Bexley VSC and Volunteer Centre Bexley, we strive to create inclusive, respectful spaces for all—whether attending events, training, or volunteering. By taking part, you agree to uphold our shared commitment of expected behaviours that ensure welcoming, positive engagement.
