Governance Training: Developing knowledge, skills and confidence to govern effectively

BVSC is hosting a free governance training session for trustees, committee members and senior staff from VCSE organisations.

This practical day will help participants understand the foundations of good governance, clarify the responsibilities of trustees and strengthen the systems, relationships and decision-making that support an effective and accountable organisation.

Through a combination of practical guidance, discussion and applied activities, participants will explore how boards can work effectively, meet their legal duties, manage risk and maintain appropriate oversight while remaining focused on their organisation’s purpose and impact.

Who should attend?

This training is relevant for trustees, management committee members, chairs, chief executives and senior staff within VCSE organisations who want to develop their understanding of governance or refresh existing knowledge. It will also be useful for people who are new to a trustee or governance role.

Places are limited to one person per organisation.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the training, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the purpose of governance within a charity and its role in ensuring legality, accountability, organisational effectiveness, strategic direction, and regulatory compliance.

  • Distinguish between governance and management, including the respective roles of trustees, committees, executives, and governance support staff.

  • Identify the key governance processes that support effective decision-making, including board meetings, delegation of authority, accountability, and record-keeping.

  • Understand the fundamentals of good governance and assess where their charity's governance arrangements align with recognised good practice.

  • Understand the board's role in setting organisational direction, overseeing strategy, and ensuring long-term sustainability.

  • Recognise the characteristics of an effective, inclusive board and identify practical ways to support strong governance, productive board meetings, and meaningful participation from diverse perspectives.

  • Identify the strengths of their board and recognise potential gaps in skills, knowledge, experience, diversity, and strategic expertise.

  • Understand the role of governance in risk management, financial oversight, and safeguarding organisational reputation.
