Bexley Buddies

Bexley Buddies is a volunteer-led initiative that addresses non-medical needs within GP surgeries and the wider community, funded by NHS ICB. This program is developed in partnership with staff at GP practices to help reduce the pressure on appointments by providing patients with access to meaningful, community-based activities that enhance health and wellbeing.

The main goal is to empower patients, particularly those who frequently visit the GP for non-clinical reasons, to build confidence, connect with others, and take greater ownership of their health.

Activities are co-designed with patients to ensure they reflect genuine needs and interests. These activities range from peer support groups and creative sessions, such as knitting and arts and crafts, to practical assistance outside of the sessions, like helping elderly participants maintain their gardens.

Delivery is centred around participants, not just volunteers. While some lead sessions, the model ensures patients remain at the heart of shaping and driving activities. GP surgeries play a key role by identifying and referring patients who may benefit, while BVSC supports with volunteer recruitment, training, safeguarding, and coordination. Where surgeries lack space, activities can also be hosted in accessible community settings such as libraries, with the NHS link and Bexley Buddies identity always maintained.

The programme has already shown strong potential to improve wellbeing, reduce social isolation, and ease demand on GPs by offering alternative, non-medical routes to support. With continued scaling across Bexley’s Primary Care Networks, Bexley Buddies can help transform how community and health services work together to address health inequalities and build resilient, connected communities.
